Tata Motors Launches Petrol Variants of Harrier and Safari SUVs Starting at ₹12.89 Lakh.

Tata Motors has kicked off the new year with a major update for its popular mid-size SUV lineup. The Indian automaker has officially launched petrol-powered versions of the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari, ending the long wait for buyers who preferred petrol over the existing diesel options. Prices for the Harrier petrol start at an attractive ₹12.89 lakh, while the three-row Safari petrol begins at ₹13.29 lakh.

The New Hyperion Petrol Engine: Power Meets Efficiency

At the heart of these new variants is Tata’s in-house developed 1.5-litre Hyperion turbocharged direct-injection (TGDi) petrol engine. This four-cylinder unit delivers 170 PS of power and 280 Nm of torque – figures that match the refinement and performance expected in the segment. Buyers can choose between a smooth 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Tata claims segment-leading fuel efficiency for the petrol Harrier and Safari, with the manual variant even earning a spot in the India Book of Records for its impressive mileage during a controlled drive. This makes the SUVs appealing not just for city driving but also for highway enthusiasts seeking a balance of performance and economy.

Pricing and Variants: Accessible Premium Options

The Tata Harrier petrol comes in a variety of trim levels, with the fully loaded Fearless Ultra Red Dark edition costing approximately ₹24.69 lakh and the Smart variant starting at ₹12.89 lakh. Pure X, Adventure X Plus, and the new Fearless Ultra, which adds high-end features like a dual-tone interior and more technology, are important variations.
With prices ranging from ₹13.29 lakh to roughly ₹25.20 lakh, the Safari petrol has a similar structure. It receives an exclusive Accomplished Ultra trim with features designed for families, such as a luxurious third row and ventilated second-row seats (for 6-seater models).

Loaded with Features: Tech and Safety at the Forefront

Tata hasn’t held back on features. Highlights include a massive 14.5-inch (36.9 cm) Harman touchscreen powered by Samsung Neo QLED technology, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, JBL audio with Dolby Atmos, and voice-assisted panoramic sunroof with mood lighting.

Safety remains a strong suit with Level 2 ADAS, 360-degree cameras, a digital IRVM with built-in dual dashcam, and seven airbags as standard. Both SUVs continue to boast a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, reinforcing Tata’s reputation for robust build quality.

Inside, the cabins feel premium with dual-tone themes, ventilated front (and second-row in Safari) seats, gesture-controlled tailgate, and connected tech via iRA 2.0, including Alexa integration and over-the-air updates.

Why This Launch Matters

The Harrier and Safari, which were previously exclusively diesel vehicles, now directly compete with rivals that run on gasoline, such as the Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus, and Mahindra XUV700. A wider range of people can purchase the SUVs thanks to the petrol option, particularly in urban markets where diesel restrictions and preferences favor quieter, smoother petrol engines.
These new models are expected to greatly increase sales due to their competitive pricing, cutting-edge features, and Tata’s increasing dependability. Dealerships across the country are accepting reservations, and deliveries are anticipated to start shortly.
